Poland unveils details of €2.4bn fortification of eastern borders

Poland has announced a major €2.4 billion initiative to enhance fortifications along its eastern border regions, particularly facing Belarus, to prevent hybrid threats, including illegal crossings and hostile activities linked to Russia and Belarus. The project involves constructing fences, anti-vehicle trenches, patrol roads, lighting, electronic surveillance, and other security infrastructure across about 187 km of frontier, prioritizing areas vulnerable to hybrid warfare tactics. This effort builds on border security measures started in 2021 amid migrant crises orchestrated by Belarus. The Polish government has emphasized the project as crucial to national defense and deterrence amid intensified geopolitical tensions and Russian aggression in the region. Implementation is scheduled from 2024 until 2026, enhancing Poland’s conventional border security capabilities.
