Lithuania will disconnect and dismantle power transmission lines with Russia and Belarus in February 2025 as part of Baltic states’ synchronization with continental European electricity grids.

The Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid announced that power transmission lines connecting Lithuania to Russia and Belarus will be disconnected on February 8, 2025, coinciding with the expiration of the BRELL agreement, a joint electricity system between Russia, Belarus, and Baltic states. Following disconnection, the lines will be dismantled immediately. This move is part of the Baltic states’ strategic effort to synchronize their power grid with continental Europe by February 9, 2025. Prior to disconnection, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will conduct a joint isolated operation test of the grid on February 8, after which they will not return to the Russian IPS/UPS system. The Lithuanian government has also removed seven 330-kilovolt power links with Russia and Belarus from the national security assets list. The Baltic TSOs officially notified Russia and Belarus in July 2024 about their withdrawal from the BRELL contract effective February 2025.
