Latvia, together with Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland, has called on the European Union to provide financial backing to strengthen the Eastern external border of the EU and NATO. A joint letter signed by Latvian PM Evika Silina, Estonia’s Kristen Michal, Lithuania’s Gitanas Nauseda, and Poland’s Donald Tusk underlines that fortifying this border is a shared European concern due to ongoing aggressions from Russia affecting security and the environment. This message was conveyed ahead of the European Council meeting held in Brussels on June 26, 2025, where border reinforcement and related investments in defense and security were set as primary topics. The Baltic Defence Line and Eastern Shield initiatives are ongoing projects aimed at enhancing counter-mobility defenses and layered measures along the Eastern flank to prevent and deter potential enemy threats, particularly from Russia and Belarus.
