On July 7, 2025, Poland implemented border controls on its border with Lithuania, a move described by the Lithuanian president’s adviser as a ‘domino effect’ from Germany’s earlier introduction of controls on its border with Poland. Poland conducts random vehicle checks at 13 border crossings and has placed additional controls at three specific Lithuanian-Polish crossings. Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratiovici stated that these controls were initially planned to last one month, until August 5, but Poland’s Interior Minister hinted at a possible extension. Warsaw claims that the controls aim to stop secondary irregular migration routes coming from Belarus through Latvia. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda criticized these measures as unwelcome within the Schengen zone. The Lithuanian adviser also emphasized that similar problems in Latvia do not justify border closings. These developments reflect legal and political tensions affecting border freedom within the Schengen area and underscore the impact of Germany’s policy on neighboring countries' border management.
