Russia’s 237th Regiment reportedly destroyed near Sumy, with losses topping 80%

Despite its stalled offensive in the area, Russia’s forces continue to suffer heavy casualties in Sumy. An attempted breakthrough near Yunakivka ended with the rout of an entire Russian regiment, claims

pro-war Russian channel Severny Kanal, which is linked to Russia’s armed forces.

The report concerns the 237th Air Assault Regiment, which the Kremlin reconstituted in 2018 as it prepared for the invasion of Ukraine. Near Yunakivka, the unit effectively ceased to exist after commanders used soldiers as cannon fodder.

The regiment’s task was to push into the eastern part of Yunakivka. Despite objections from some officers, commanders chose to advance across fields, believing it was the fastest route. After repeated attempts to force that path, the regiment lost about 80% of its personnel. Following those losses, the 237th was pulled back for reconstitution.

From a military science standpoint, losing 80% of personnel renders a unit completely combat-ineffective. The regiment ceases to function as an organized fighting formation, and such losses are considered catastrophic.

Importantly, the report says this is not a mistake but a deliberate tactic by Russia’s military leadership - observed along the entire front line. Russian forces are “stacking the front” with manpower, trading massive casualties for minimal gains.
