Tensions are rising within Russia’s top military ranks, and the Kremlin fears it could trigger domestic destabilization.
Russia is preparing a new wave of repression within its military leadership - Putin is launching a large-scale purge of generals, 24 Kanal reports. That’s according to journalist and international analyst Alexander Demchenko.
Journalist and international analyst Alexander Demchenko notes that the Kremlin understands police cannot cope with those labeled “SVO (special military operation) veterans” - former convicts and mercenaries sent to kill Ukrainians. These individuals have obtained weapons and combat experience and could turn into armed gangs, posing a threat to Russia itself.
According to the expert, this is why security in major cities will be ensured not by law enforcement but by army units. Putin is effectively preparing to deploy troops to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yaroslavl and other cities. Such a step lays the groundwork for conflict among generals and the military, potentially leading to a “military junta” in Russia.
Demchenko believes Putin will begin removing generals who could become rivals in a power struggle. Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov and several senior General Staff officers have already been arrested. Sergei Gerasimov is also at risk, as the Kremlin could pin all military failures on him.
The analyst emphasized that Putin needs new loyal cadres, including Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, new Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, businessman Kirill Dmitriev and Putin’s former bodyguard Alexei Dyumin. They are expected to replace the old general staff and officials who are gradually being pushed out.
Demchenko noted that tensions at the top are escalating: the military faces two paths — submit and await repression or try to create a new “Prigozhin” and move toward mutiny. The FSB already controls the army and is arresting officers en masse, intensifying the strain.
