Kremlin: Putin is open to meeting Zelensky, but no serious preparations are underway

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian media that Vladimir Putin “does not rule out” a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, he said top-level talks would require serious preparations that are largely absent right now.

“So far, it can’t be said that the work at the expert level is in full swing,” Peskov noted, commenting on the prospects for organizing a possible meeting.

He also claimed Moscow had previously conveyed its positions on resolving the war to Kyiv in writing. Ukraine, however, has repeatedly emphasized that any negotiations are possible only after Russia stops its aggression and withdraws its troops.

Addressing other foreign policy matters, the Kremlin representative said details of Putin’s recent conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska are being deliberately withheld. He added that Putin has a meeting scheduled today with the permanent members of Russia’s Security Council.

Peskov’s remarks underscore that Moscow is signaling a “readiness for talks” while taking no concrete steps to organize them. Russia continues its war against Ukraine, making any discussion of a meeting with Zelensky largely a propaganda exercise.
