U.S. approves $8.5 billion sale of Patriot systems to Denmark for Ukraine

The U.S. has cleared a major deal to supply Denmark with Patriot air-defense systems and related weaponry. The package is valued at $8.5 billion.

It includes six launchers, radar stations, guidance systems and missiles, the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a press release. The DSCA, which oversees military cooperation and foreign arms sales, announced the decision here:

Because Denmark does not currently field Patriot systems, it will buy them directly from U.S. manufacturers. According to the State Department, Copenhagen plans to use the systems to help Ukraine repel Russian aggression.

The Netherlands previously made similar purchases and transferred part of the equipment to Kyiv to bolster its air defenses.

Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to Western partners for additional Patriot systems to shield cities from Russian aircraft and missiles. With Washington less willing to finance new shipments on its own, NATO allies have been stepping in, buying U.S.-made air defenses and transferring them to Kyiv.
