Poland backs tougher EU sanctions on Russia as bloc readies 19th package

Poland has signaled it is ready to join new sanctions against Russia. The European Union last imposed measures on Moscow more than a month ago. Brussels is now preparing a 19th package of restrictions.

Poland fully supports tightening sanctions on Russia, and Warsaw’s stance remains unchanged, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said.

“It’s very important to adopt successive packages. Please remember that, for example, sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet need to be updated, supplemented with new ship and crew names that we must bar from our ports when they violate sanctions, allowing Putin to finance his war,” Sikorski emphasized.

“At the informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Copenhagen, only tough topics: the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Thanks to the Polish Air Force, now heading back home.” Sikorski wrote on X.

The European Union last imposed sanctions on Russia more than a month ago. Another, 19th package of measures is now being prepared in Brussels.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc’s 19th sanctions package aims to hit Russia’s energy and financial sectors. She urged European capitals to present concrete proposals to tighten measures against Russia. EU members are expected to submit their ideas next week.

Meanwhile, Politico reported the EU’s 19th package will not include new major restrictions on the sale of energy resources that fund Russia’s war against Ukraine.
