Ukrainian drones attacked the Ryazan oil refinery overnight on September 5, according to Robert Brovdi, commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces.
“A 17.1-million-tons-per-year facility. One of the four largest refineries in Russia,” he wrote. He added that Ukrainian drones also struck an oil depot in occupied Luhansk.
Ryazan region Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed a drone attack in the region, saying eight drones were shot down.
“According to preliminary data, there are no casualties or damage to residential buildings and infrastructure. Debris fell on the territory of an industrial enterprise; the consequences are being addressed,” he said.
The Telegram channel Astra, citing local residents, reported that a fire broke out at the refinery after the drone attack.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the attack hit the ELOU-AVT-6 primary crude processing unit, which has an estimated capacity of about 6 million tons of oil per year. Satellite data from FIRMS show fires not only at ELOU-AVT-6 but also at another primary processing unit, “AVT-4.”
The Ryazan refinery can process up to 17.1 million tons of crude annually. It produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied gases and other products, some of which are used to supply Russia’s military.
It is at least the fourth attack on this refinery since the start of the year (overnight on January 24 and 26, and on February 24).
