Russian strikes damage energy facility in Kyiv region amid overnight barrage

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said Russia hit a facility in the country’s power system in the Kyiv region during an overnight attack on September 8. One thermal generation site came under heavy fire.

The ministry confirmed in a morning statement that the occupiers attacked a piece of civilian infrastructure. It said the goal was to harm civilians and leave Ukrainian homes, medical facilities, kindergartens and schools without power and heat.

“Generation assets, electricity transmission and distribution systems, and gas infrastructure are not military targets. The enemy clearly understands it is striking critical civilian infrastructure,” the ministry said.

Energy workers and rescue crews are working to eliminate the aftermath of the strike on the thermal generation facility, according to the press service. Any changes to electricity supplies for consumers will be announced separately.

Notably, the Energy Ministry’s press office quickly deleted its first post about the strike on a thermal generation site in the Kyiv region and published a new one minutes later.

Officials did not specify which energy facility was targeted.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said it extinguished a fire at an industrial enterprise in the Kyiv region after the strikes on September 8. There were no deaths or injuries, according to rescuers. A shopping mall and a fitness club in the Obukhiv district were also damaged by the blast wave.

Local Telegram channels reported explosions overnight near the Trypillia Thermal Power Plant in the Obukhiv district on the bank of the Kaniv Reservoir.

Focus sources say the attack began around midnight. Groups of Shahed drones flew in; during the attack the lights went out once, then water supply was lost, but service was restored by morning. The source noted it was difficult to say how badly the TPP was affected, if at all.

Monitoring channels and journalist Andriy Smoliy reported overnight on September 8 that the Russians attacked the Trypillia TPP in the Kyiv region with Shahed drones. Local channels reported at least 10 explosions near the energy site. There was no official confirmation of a strike on the Trypillia TPP at the time of publication.

Ukrainian Army General and former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service Mykola Malomuzh said Russia had identified three primary targets for upcoming attacks on Ukraine: railway stations, routes for delivering ammunition and weapons, and energy facilities.
