Orban claims Ukraine will be divided into three parts

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made another controversial claim about Ukraine, speculating that the country will be split into three parts after the war, according to the pro-government Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet.

Ukraine would be carved into a Russian zone, a demilitarized area and a western zone, the Hungarian leader asserted.

“The fate of Ukraine seems to be sealed. Today in Europe there is ‘elegant’ talk about security guarantees, but these guarantees in fact mean the partition of Ukraine. The result of the partition will be a Russian zone, a demilitarized zone and a western zone,” he said.

According to Orban, the question “is no longer whether a Russian zone will exist,” but “how many territories it will include and which ones.”

“The Russian zone already exists. Today the debate is only about how many regions it should include,” Orban said, adding that the borders of the so-called demilitarized zone are still being discussed.

Orban and his government have stepped up anti-Ukraine rhetoric since the start of the full-scale war. Since 2022, official Budapest has periodically made inflammatory statements about Ukraine and at times taken unfriendly actions. In August, it emerged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had asked U.S. President Donald Trump to weigh in on Orban, who is blocking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
