Russian airstrike on Yarova kills 21 during pension payout, Zelensky urges global response

More than 20 people were killed in a Russian airstrike on the settlement of Yarova in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday, September 9.

“An overtly brutal Russian strike with an aerial bomb on the settlement of Yarova in the Donetsk region. Directly at people. Ordinary civilian people. At the moment when pensions were being paid out,” Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel.

In a video he posted showing the aftermath, bodies of the dead and a car damaged by the blast can be seen.

Zelensky urged that Russian attacks must not be left “without the world’s proper response.” “The world must not remain idle. The United States must respond. Europe must respond. The Twenty (the Group of Twenty ) must respond. Strong actions are needed so that Russia stops bringing death,” the Ukrainian president said.

At least 21 people were killed and 21 others were wounded in the strike, according to Vadym Filashkin, head of the regional military administration. He said the attack hit a crowd of people receiving pensions. “Rescuers, medics, police and local authorities are working at the scene. We are helping the victims and establishing the exact consequences of this crime,” Filashkin wrote.

Russia’s Defense Ministry did not comment on the strike on Yarova.
