Russia's Expanding Hybrid War Against Europe Includes Widespread Drone Incursions and Covert Operations

Starting September 9, 2025, multiple drone incursions attributed to Russia disrupted European airspace, forcing airport closures in Poland (Warsaw, Rzeszów, Lublin, Modlin), Denmark (Copenhagen, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, Skrydstrup Air Base), Germany, Belgium, and Estonia. Estonia also experienced a brief airspace violation by Russian MiG-31 fighter jets. Poland and Estonia invoked NATO’s Article 4 emergency consultations due to perceived threats. The Kremlin denied responsibility, attributing drone deployments to Ukrainian strikes on Crimea. Additional hybrid warfare tactics include coordinated hate provocations by a Serbian cell on Russian intelligence orders targeting Jewish and Muslim communities in France and Germany; a bribery scandal involving ex-UK MEP Nathan Gill linked to Kremlin influence; sabotage attempts like the foiled Polish suicide-bomb highway plot tied to Russian GRU; and covert undersea cable surveillance by the Russian spy ship Yantar near UK and Norwegian waters potentially aimed at disrupting NATO infrastructure. European nations, including Denmark and Poland, are enhancing defense capabilities with mobile radar drone detection networks and authorization to shoot down unauthorized drones. European leaders emphasize that addressing social cohesion and democracy vulnerabilities is critical to countering Russia’s full hybrid warfare spectrum beyond conventional rearmament.
