Russian drone incursion is a threat to Europe, says Polish PM Tusk

On 10 September 2025, Poland faced a significant security breach when 19 Russian drones entered its airspace, some shot down by Polish defenses. Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the incident as a threat not only to Poland but to all of Europe. After an emergency National Security Council meeting, Poland announced plans to receive aerial defense training from Ukraine, highlighting Ukrainian anti-drone systems as battlefield-tested and highly effective. At least five drones were reported to have flown directly toward a NATO base in Poland that serves as a key logistics hub for military equipment bound for Ukraine. Russia denies responsibility, with Moscow’s diplomat in Poland alleging the drones came from Ukraine, a claim firmly rejected by Tusk as disinformation. A drone was recovered in Przymiarki, Księżopol municipality, Biłgoraj district, marking continued incursions since the initial breach. France pledged support, with President Macron announcing the dispatch of Rafale fighter jets for Poland’s airspace protection. Additionally, the Russian ambassador to France was summoned by the French Foreign Ministry. Poland also requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to address the incident. The event underscores rising tensions and the challenges NATO faces protecting member airspace from Russian hybrid threats.
