Ukraine’s Navy says it carried out a successful strike on a communications hub used by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in occupied Crimea.
The target, located in Sevastopol, was hit overnight on Thursday, September 11, and sustained significant damage, according to the Ukrainian Navy’s press service. Details and images from the aftermath were published by the navy’s press service.
The operation was conducted by Ukrainian naval units, the statement reads. “A communications node of the Russian Black Sea Fleet on the grounds of Sevastopol’s 184th Scientific Research Experimental Base was struck,” the military reported, adding that the facility supported command and control for Black Sea Fleet units.
The navy released satellite images showing the aftermath at the site, including two large holes in buildings believed to have resulted from the strike.
According to the Telegram channel “Crimean Wind,” the target was located in Kazachya Bay on the peninsula. There was no independent confirmation of the strike. Russia’s Defense Ministry also did not comment.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence directorate (GUR) said on September 9 that its special forces struck a Black Sea Fleet vessel off the coast of Novorossiysk in Russia’s Krasnodar region. The attack was carried out using a strike drone, the agency said.
According to GUR, the target was an MPSV07-class multipurpose vessel commissioned in 2015. The Insider reported the ship was the “Spasatel Demidov.” Earlier, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said that after regular Ukrainian strikes on targets in Crimea, Russia had “no combat-capable ships” left.
