Ukraine carried out a successful strike on the Metafrax Chemicals plant in Russia’s Perm Krai, a facility linked to the defense sector and under sanctions.

Overnight, Ukraine’s Defense Forces attacked the Metafrax Chemicals plant in Perm Krai, one of the largest methanol producers in Russia.

Russian authorities confirmed the attack.

The site is roughly 1,600 kilometers from Ukraine, indicating Kyiv used long-range drones.

Local officials confirmed a strike on an industrial facility without specifying which plant was hit. They said there were “no casualties,” that production was operating “as usual,” and that “there is no threat to residents’ safety.”

Metafrax Chemicals is under sanctions from the United Kingdom and Ukraine. Sanctions documents describe it as an enterprise that benefits or supports the Russian government by operating in a strategically important sector, including the defense industry.

Metafrax Chemicals produces chemicals—methanol and its derivatives—used in the military industry, including for rocket fuel and explosives.

In February 2024, Metafrax Chemicals came under the management of JSC Roschem, underscoring increased state control over chemical production. In September 2023, a Russian court invalidated the company’s 1992 privatization and ordered 94.2% of its shares seized from former owners, citing violations of “the economic sovereignty of the Russian Federation and its defense capability.”

“Metafrax Chemicals is not just business chemistry. It is a key link in the chain that serves Putin’s war machine. Striking such a facility is a significant success for Ukraine’s Defense Forces.”
