Kremlin aims for fall Trump–Putin talks amid behind-the-scenes U.S.–Russia consultations

The United States and Russia are discussing the possibility of another meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow and Washington are holding quiet, behind-the-scenes consultations as they prepare a new round of talks between Trump and Putin. A three-way meeting among Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Putin is possible. Trump says there has been some progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin is aiming to hold a new round of talks with the United States this fall, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

Ryabkov said the delay in convening the next round stems from a shared reluctance to meet without tangible results. For now, he said, Moscow and Washington are discussing a range of issues privately as they lay the groundwork for the talks.

“As long as there is political will on both sides, it’s better to continue working behind closed doors. It may lay the foundation for new decisions,” Ryabkov said.

In September, some media outlets reported that Russia and the United States were coordinating the date and venue for a new meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The White House and the Kremlin have not officially confirmed those reports.

The prospect of direct talks between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin moved closer after Trump met the Kremlin leader in Alaska on August 15, 2025. The two discussed conditions for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. No concrete decisions were announced, but Trump said there had been some progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.
