Russian forces began striking Ukraine this summer with a new jet-powered drone known as the “Geran-3,” which relies on foreign-made components, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said in a Facebook post.
The “Geran-3” carries at least 45 foreign components, according to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR).
Parts originate from the United States, China, Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan.
GUR says the “Geran-3” is analogous to Iran’s Shahed-238. The new strike drone in the “U” series is equipped with a Chinese turbojet engine. Its top speed is listed at 300–370 kph, with a flight range of up to 1,000 km. The drone accelerates to its maximum speed in areas covered by air defenses and electronic warfare, and on final approach to its target.
Ukrainian specialists determined the drone uses no fewer than 45 foreign-made parts. About half are American-made, along with eight Chinese, seven Swiss, three German, two British and one Japanese component.
Ukrainian media have reported the drone can reach 500–600 km/h thanks to its turbojet engine, with a maximum range of 1,500 km and a warhead weighing 300 kg. Its performance is markedly better than the piston-engine “Geran-2.”
Russian forces used the “Geran-3” to attack Kyiv overnight July 30–31, killing 11 civilians.
