Zelensky says Russian army leadership is being misled by mid-level commanders

Russian maps seized during the counteroffensive in Donetsk region show Russian forces are presenting wishful thinking as fact, President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a meeting with journalists.

“Yesterday, during a briefing on our operation (the counteroffensive near Dobropillya), I saw the electronic layout of our forces and assets and I saw the Russian maps. Their reports differ markedly from reality. Where we have restored the situation, their maps show the opposite,” he said.

According to Zelensky, this indicates that reports from mid-level commanders to top Russian leadership do not reflect conditions on the ground.

“I think that’s not bad. In the information space there was a constant narrative about where they are in Donbas — that in 30 days they would supposedly seize Pokrovsk completely and by November take the east. But that doesn’t match reality,” the head of state said.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces are conducting a counteroffensive near Pokrovsk and Dobropillya. Some 160 square kilometers have been liberated, with another 171 square kilometers cleared of Russian sabotage groups. Ukrainian forces have advanced between 3 and 7 kilometers into Russian defensive lines.
