In late September 2025, several European countries reported a surge of unidentified drone sightings near critical military and civilian infrastructure. Danish Armed Forces confirmed drone incursions over Danish territory, labeling it the most serious attack on their critical infrastructure to date. NATO responded by enhancing its military presence and counter-drone capabilities in the Baltic Sea region. Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, and Denmark observed drone activities disrupting airports and military sites, with official concern that Russia is using these drones for intelligence collection and hybrid warfare tactics. The EU is moving forward with a plan to construct a ‘drone wall’ to strengthen defense by improving detection and interception. During a virtual EU defense ministers' meeting, emphasis was placed on urgent development and funding to counter such threats. Poland publicly acknowledged similar incursions, including Russian drones over Polish airspace targeting NATO sites. The situation has elevated tensions and highlighted vulnerabilities in European defenses against emerging drone threats.
