Overnight into Sunday, September 28, Russia launched a combined missile-and-drone barrage across Ukraine, including strikes on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) said residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged across five districts of the capital, with fatalities reported.

In Zaporizhzhia, more than two dozen people were injured, including three children.

In Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, a direct hit on a five-story residential building ignited fires on the third and fourth floors and partially destroyed the structure. SES rescuers recovered the body of a 12-year-old girl from the rubble. Three people were rescued from the building; one person was injured. The blaze has been contained, and firefighters remain on scene to fully eliminate the consequences.

At another address in the Solomianskyi district, a strike hit the Institute of Cardiology. Two bodies were found at the scene. The fire at the medical facility has been contained.

“The strike on the cardiology center poses a serious threat to medical care for patients with cardiovascular diseases. The extent of equipment damage and the timeline for resuming operations are being clarified,” the Kyiv.News outlet reported.

“Russians are opening the child-killing counter again,” said Kyiv City Military Administration chief Tymur Tkachenko. By 9 a.m., he said at least four people had been confirmed dead in the Russian attack, adding the figures were likely not final.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces carried out at least eight strikes, with the assault lasting from 1 a.m. until 5:30 a.m. Regional military administration head Ivan Fedorov said homes and infrastructure were damaged in the city’s Dniprovskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. He shared video of a residential building engulfed in flames. “Sunday morning. People were simply sleeping in their apartments,” he said.

In total, nine private homes and 14 apartment blocks were damaged. Non-residential premises were also hit. Emergency services are working at all impact sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s assault on Ukraine lasted more than 12 hours.

“Brutal strikes, deliberate and targeted terror against ordinary cities — nearly 500 attack drones and more than 40 missiles, including ‘Kinzhals.’ In the morning, Russian-Iranian ‘Shaheds’ were again in our skies,” the president wrote on Telegram.

He said at least 40 people were known to be wounded nationwide, including children. A bread factory, an automobile tire plant, private homes, apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure were hit.

“This cowardly attack effectively capped the week of the UN General Assembly — and this is how Russia states its real position. Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing and deserves only the toughest pressure from the world. The Kremlin benefits from continuing this war and terror as long as energy revenues flow and the shadow fleet operates. We will keep delivering counterstrikes to deprive Russia of these means and compel it to diplomacy. Everyone who wants peace must support President Trump’s efforts and halt any Russian imports. The time for decisive action came long ago, and we count on a firm response from the United States, Europe, the G7 and the G20,” Zelensky emphasized.
