Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Russian drones that violate his country’s airspace will be shot down. He also believes Russia has already “won” the war against Ukraine.
Viktor Orban said in an interview with the YouTube channel Harcosok órája, published on September 29, that he is surprised by the stance of European leaders. The Hungarian prime minister does not understand why they act toward Russia “as if they are in danger.”
Orban called Russia weak militarily and economically. At 30:06 in the video.
Orban noted that Russia has about 140 million people, while European Union countries together have more than 400 million. Russia’s GDP, he said, is also very small and does not allow it to reach economic productivity.
“What the Russians spend on military needs is only a fraction of what we spend in Western Europe. Therefore, by all measures we are stronger. I never understood: if we are stronger, why do we speak as if we are weak? Russia cannot harm us. Russia is weak militarily, economically weak,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
The host asked Orban about Russian drones intruding into Poland and what would happen if UAVs entered Hungary.
“We are not afraid of that. We will shoot them down,” the prime minister replied.
He also said that U.S. President Donald Trump asked his opinion about the Russia-Ukraine war.
“I told him that this war is over. The Russians won. The matter is closed. The question is when we will reach an agreement with the Russians and who will conclude it: will there be an agreement between the United States and Russia, or between Europe and Russia. This war cannot be won militarily,” Viktor Orban said.
In the same Harcosok órája interview, Orban said that “Ukraine will shut down without Western money.” He admitted he does not consider Ukraine a sovereign state because it is “propped up” by Western partners. He was commenting on a report about the incursion of UAVs from Hungary into Ukrainian airspace that occurred on September 26.
Orban also said Hungary will not give up Russian oil because it guarantees his country’s energy security.
