Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR) said its operatives killed a Russian National Guard lieutenant colonel and two other Rosgvardiya personnel in Russia’s Stavropol region on September 27. The officer led a group from the Russian special unit “Avangard.”
The GUR press service announced the operation on September 30. The strike took place near the hamlet of Tambukan in Stavropol Krai. The officer’s aide and driver were also killed, GUR said.
“The group was heading to a training ground but never arrived,” the agency stated.
According to GUR, the operation was conducted with support from a Caucasus liberation movement. Ukrainian operatives said they identified the locations and travel routes of the National Guard personnel and detonated an explosive device targeting their vehicle.
Avangard, a special-purpose unit formed in 1998 and formerly known as “Edelweiss,” is part of Russia’s National Guard. Its permanent base is in the city of Mineralnye Vody, Stavropol Krai.
On September 29, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces described a separate joint raid with GUR inside Russian territory, saying they killed three Russian servicemembers in a forest, destroyed their vehicle, and returned with captured equipment.
Also on September 29, GUR published the names of Russian generals it says coordinated mass missile strikes on Ukraine, including commanders of long-range and strategic aviation.
