A Latvian citizen suspected of spying for Russia's GRU on Latvian defense and NATO aircraft was detained in mid-October.

In mid-October 2025, Latvian State Security Service, in cooperation with military intelligence, detained a Latvian citizen suspected of spying for Russia’s Main Directorate of the General Staff (GRU). The suspect gathered intelligence on Latvian private infrastructure related to aircraft, NATO forces stationed in Latvia, and Latvia’s defense industry, as well as information on how SIM cards of local mobile operators are purchased. Investigators continue to examine electronic devices seized. Additionally, Latvian authorities are probing potential major sabotage operations planned by Russia-affiliated individuals in Latvia. The case follows similar espionage sentencing in Germany for Russia spying.
