Overnight into Wednesday, Russian forces launched 28 missiles (15 of them ballistic) and 405 drones of various types at Ukraine. Air defense and electronic warfare units intercepted or suppressed most of the targets, the Ukrainian Air Force said on October 22.
In total, radar units detected and tracked 433 aerial threats:
- 405 drones from the directions of Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Russia) and Chauda (temporarily occupied Crimea) โ about 250 of them were Shaheds;
- 11 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles (launch areas: Russiaโs Bryansk and Rostov regions, and the temporarily occupied Donetsk region);
- 9 Iskander-K cruise missiles (launch areas: Russiaโs Kursk and Voronezh regions, and temporarily occupied Crimea);
- 4 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles from the airspace over Russiaโs Rostov region;
- 4 Kh-59/Kh-69 air-launched guided missiles (launch area: temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region).
The main axis of the strike was Kyiv region. Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy, Chernihiv and Odesa regions were also affected.
Air defenses responded with combat aircraft, surface-to-air missile units, electronic warfare and drone units, and mobile fire teams.
As of 12:30 p.m., air defenses shot down or suppressed 349 aerial targets:
- 333 drones of various types;
- 8 Iskander-K cruise missiles;
- 6 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles;
- 2 Kh-59/Kh-69 air-launched guided missiles.
There were direct hits from 12 missiles and 55 attack drones at 26 locations, and debris from downed targets fell at 19 locations. In addition, 17 drones failed to reach their targets (lost from tracking). Details are being clarified.
The attack is ongoing; several enemy drones remain in Ukraineโs airspace.
