Lithuania plans to develop technology to counter smuggling balloons and drones from Belarus within six months, according to Economy Vice Minister Paulius Petrauskas.

On November 14, 2025, Lithuania announced rapid development plans for anti-drone and anti-balloon technology to counter increasing aerial threats from Belarus. Economy Vice Minister Paulius Petrauskas stated that several dozen Lithuanian companies have submitted proposals to detect, monitor, and neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles and smuggling balloons. The government aims to select the best ideas within two weeks and develop operational technology within six months. The Interior Ministry is working on procurement and integration specifications, expected to take three to six months. Some tested systems were deployed in Ukraine, but new, combined solutions are sought. Petrauskas noted the uniqueness of the threat, comparable only to those faced by South Korea and Israel, necessitating the creation of bespoke solutions. Earlier in November, 35 applications were received to protect Lithuanian airspace, especially for disruptions at Vilnius Airport, with promising ideas sharing a 1 million euro award.
