Polish authorities suspect Russian intelligence in railway sabotage near Warsaw

Polish authorities suspect Russia of orchestrating a railway sabotage carried out two days ago, according to a statement by Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister-coordinator for special services, cited by Onet.

“Our security services are at work. Officers of the Internal Security Agency (ABW) are collecting evidence and data and verifying information already obtained. The organizers [of these acts of sabotage - and everything points to Russian intelligence services—would very much like to know which direction the investigation is heading, which threads our officers are pulling, what leads they are trying to trace,” Dobrzyński said.

He also urged journalists to treat reports from unverified sources with caution, warning they could be “typical Russian disinformation.” “Russian intelligence services want to disrupt our society and intimidate us. I assure you our officers are monitoring this case and will conduct a full investigation,” Dobrzyński added.

On November 18, Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened a scheduled meeting of the Government Committee for National Security to discuss the railway sabotage.

On November 16, damage was found on the Warsaw–Lublin rail line near the village of Mika, about 100 km from Warsaw. After checking a report from a train driver who was forced to stop, law enforcement concluded the tracks had been damaged by an explosion. Police later found a second explosive device nearby that failed to detonate.

According to Onet, another incident occurred the same day: the overhead line was damaged near the city of Puławy. It is unclear whether it broke accidentally or was cut.
