According to new research, there have been numerous other incidents in recent months linked to Russia and China in orbit, Tagesschau reports.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said two satellites also used by the German armed forces are currently being shadowed by two Russian reconnaissance satellites.
โThe military cat-and-mouse looks like this: a Russian satellite suddenly changes its orbit. It moves to a position that soon gives it a better view โ specifically of a Bundeswehr facility in Germany where Ukrainian soldiers are being trained,โ the outlet explains.
It was also reported that this summer Russia allegedly jammed a German military satellite from a ground station, causing communications disruptions that lasted several hours.
โWe are under threat. Russia has the capability to pose a real danger to us and significantly disrupt our operations in space,โ said Major General Michael Traut, commander of the Bundeswehr Space Command.
In addition, the head of the UK Space Command recently said Russia is effectively attempting to interfere with Britainโs military activity on an almost weekly basis, regularly jamming British satellites.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia could start a war in space in the future, potentially using nuclear weapons against satellites. French President Emmanuel Macron said a few days ago that space has become โa battlefield.โ
According to the outletโs sources, while Russiaโs space capabilities are considered outdated, Moscowโs demonstrated willingness to escalate is alarming. That raises suspicions that Russia is deliberately viewing space as a future theater of war.
