Poland to close Russia’s last operating consulate in Gdansk after railway sabotage

Poland has decided to shut Russia’s Consulate General in Gdansk, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on November 19. He said Poland’s consent for the consulate’s operation would be withdrawn in response to a recent act of sabotage on the railway.

Earlier, Russian consulates in Krakow (in June) and Poznan (in November 2024) were already closed. After the Gdansk mission closes, Russian citizens will be able to receive consular services only at the embassy’s consular section. The Insider reported that people seeking services at the Gdansk consulate are already being redirected to the consular section in Warsaw, where long lines were common even before.

On November 16, an explosion damaged tracks on the Warsaw–Lublin line about 100 kilometers from the capital. Nearby, police found a second explosive device that failed to detonate. On November 18, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said authorities had identified two suspects in the railway sabotage. He said they are Ukrainian citizens acting on instructions from Russian security services.
