Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at Shatura power plant, leading to airport closures around Moscow

A fire broke out at the Shatura State District Power Plant (Shaturskaya GRES) in Moscow region after a Ukrainian drone attack, according to regional governor Andrei Vorobyov. One of Russia’s oldest thermal power stations, the plant helps supply electricity and heat to the Moscow area and has a capacity of 1,500 MW. Telegram channels on Sunday, November 23, posted videos of the blaze.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that overnight on November 23 air defenses destroyed two Ukrainian drones headed toward the capital.

This plant supplies the Moscow metropolitan area with heat and electricity, the Russian outlet Astra reported

“The GRES has been attacked and is on fire in Shatura, Moscow region,” reads the caption to a video showing a large blaze at the facility following the drone strike. 

Local residents said at least five attack drones reached the energy facility. 

Shatura GRES has a capacity of 1,500 MW and is one of Russia’s oldest power plants, founded in 1920.

Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov has not yet commented on the large The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, reported the suspension of operations at Zhukovsky Airport in Ramenskoye and Nizhny Novgorod’s airport in Chkalov.

The agency said temporary restrictions on arrivals and departures were imposed to ensure flight safety.

Airports in Gelendzhik, Krasnodar (Pashkovsky), Tambov (Donskoye), and Yaroslavl (Tunoshna) were also temporarily closed.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, in its daily briefing, claimed 75 drones were shot down.

The ministry said the majority - 36 - were destroyed over the Black Sea, with another 10 downed over annexed Crimea.
