A NATO first: construction of a Ukrainian defense plant begins in Denmark

Construction has officially begun in Denmark on a plant owned by Ukrainian company Fire Point, which makes the “Flamingo” missile. No NATO country had previously allowed a Ukrainian defense firm to set up production on its territory, BILD reported.

According to BILD, the Fire Point plant will be built in the small town of Vojens in southern Denmark. Work on the facility is already officially underway.

Fire Point is expected to manufacture solid propellant at the Danish site for its long-range “Flamingo” missiles. The missiles were developed by Fire Point’s engineers and are currently Ukraine’s longest-range weapon. “Flamingo” can strike ground targets at distances of up to 3,000 kilometers, with a warhead weighing more than 1,000 kilograms.

Building such a plant in Ukraine is effectively not feasible; Russian forces would likely destroy it soon after it opened. As a result, the decision was made to construct the facility abroad.

In the summer of 2025, Denmark and Ukraine signed an agreement paving the way for Ukrainian defense companies to establish operations on Danish soil. Denmark thus became the first NATO member to allow Ukrainian defense production on its territory.

Denmark will also allocate 500 million Danish kroner to help Ukrainian defense firms build plants in the country. Copenhagen says cooperation with Ukraine will enhance security.

Fire Point developed the “Flamingo” missiles several months ago. Their first reported use came in the spring of 2025. Mass production is slated to begin in December of this year or early 2026.
