Russian warplane drops bomb near Belgorod substation, triggering power outages

A powerful explosion rocked the Russian city of Belgorod on the evening of December 6. An aircraft-dropped bomb hit a power substation, knocking out electricity in the city center.

The blast occurred near an electrical substation on Storozhevaya Street in Belgorod. A Russian aerial bomb fell next to the facility, the local channel “Pepel” reported.

Because no air-raid siren sounded before the blast, the outlet concluded the munition was of “domestic” origin. The channel also cited residents living near the impact site who said they heard the roar of a plane flying toward the border before the explosion.

Other residents reported hearing aircraft before the power went out, and said bright blue flashes and lightning were visible in the sky after the blast.

Russian media said a “rain” of shrapnel, stones and soil fell over rooftops along Storozhevaya Street after the explosion.

Belgorod Mayor Valentin Demidov described the incident as the arrival of an “unidentified munition.” Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov used the same wording.

Both officials said one person was injured and taken to a hospital with barotrauma. Shrapnel damaged a cargo truck, as well as windows in two private homes and an outbuilding.

Parts of Belgorod and the Belgorodsky district are experiencing power supply disruptions.

Earlier, on the night of November 27, the Belgorod region came under missile and drone attacks that damaged the Luch combined heat and power plant. At the time, Russian officials limited their statements to reporting strikes on “energy facilities.”
