NABU raids Ukraine’s State Tax Service amid probe linked to ‘Midas’corruption case

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) on December 10 carried out searches at the central office of the State Tax Service and at the tax administrations in Khmelnytskyi and Mykolaiv regions, European Pravda reported.

The tax agency’s press service confirmed the investigative actions, saying the criminal case concerns events in 2024 to early 2025 and involves issues tied to high-risk companies.

The agency said its leadership and staff are fully cooperating with anti-corruption authorities. “Details of the pretrial investigation and the case are within the competence of law enforcement,” the statement added.

A source at the tax service told the outlet the searches may be linked to a sweeping corruption probe in the energy sector. In November, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) conducted Operation “Midas,” alleging a kickback scheme at state nuclear company Energoatom in which a criminal group demanded 10–15% of contract values from counterparties. Those implicated include businessman Timur Mindich, former energy and justice ministers Svitlana Hrynchuk and Herman Halushchenko, former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov and others.

The “Midas” case has triggered the biggest political crisis of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s tenure. On November 28, searches were conducted at the premises of Presidential Office chief Andriy Yermak - the same day he resigned.
