Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban insisted he does not want Ukraine to collapse.
In a post on X, he said such an outcome would be a catastrophe for Hungary. Orban made the remarks at a so-called anti-war rally in the Hungarian city of Szeged. He posted footage of his speech on X.
“Make no mistake: the collapse of Ukraine would be a catastrophe for Hungary. Stability next door matters. Hungary supplies 44% of electricity and 58% of gas to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the war weakens Ukraine day by day. Only peace can strengthen it. Anyone who truly supports Ukraine must want peace, and must want it right now,” he wrote alongside the video.
According to Orban, the breakup of Ukraine is extremely disadvantageous for his country, and Hungary must do everything to prevent it.
“A farmer and a real estate speculator understand this well. The value of your plot depends not only on the plot itself, but also on your neighbor, their condition, who lives there. These are not trifles. And it’s the same with countries,” he emphasized.
He also lamented that some of the assistance Hungary provides to Ukraine is allegedly being stolen.
Last week, Orban voiced dissatisfaction with the European Union’s policies.
“Bypassing Hungary and violating European law in broad daylight, the Brussels elite is taking steps to seize frozen Russian assets - a declaration of war. Meanwhile, they are demanding another €135 billion from member states to fuel the conflict. Hungary will not play along with this distorted Brussels scheme,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
In late November, he visited the Kremlin and offered Hungary’s capital, Budapest, as a venue for peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After Orban’s trip to Moscow, Polish President Karol Nawrocki declined to meet with him.
