Poland preparing €2bn anti-drone fortifications along its eastern border amid Russian threat

On 27 December 2025, Poland announced plans to construct anti-drone fortifications along its eastern border with Belarus, investing €2 billion in new air defense systems aimed to be completed within 24 months, to counter the ongoing Russian threat. The defenses will include sensors, anti-drone weapons, and other technical infrastructure designed to prevent drone incursions and potential future Russian invasions. The build-up is focused on the Podlasie region and other eastern municipalities bordering Belarus. Polish Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated the measures are crucial due to ongoing Russian hybrid warfare tactics and drone incursions in the area. This move reflects Poland’s broader effort to strengthen its border security amidst tensions caused by Russia’s military activities and influence in the region. The fortifications complement existing border controls and military patrols, including helicopter surveillance.
