Overnight on December 27, Russia carried out one of its largest combined attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, with the main strike hitting the Kyiv region. Russia’s armed forces launched 559 aerial weapons - various types of missiles and hundreds of attack drones.
Ukraine’s air defenses showed high effectiveness: by 13:00, 503 aerial targets had been shot down or suppressed, the Air Force press service said . Aviation, air-defense missile units, electronic warfare teams and mobile fire groups took part in repelling the attack.
According to the Air Force, Russia launched 40 missiles and 519 drones. Ukraine’s air defenses destroyed:
- 474 attack drones of the Shahed and “Gerbera” types,
- 6 ballistic and aeroballistic Iskander-M and Kinzhal missiles,
- 4 Iskander-K and Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as 19 Kh-101 cruise missiles.
Despite the air defenses’ success, 10 missiles and 25 attack drones found their targets. Damage was reported at 30 different locations. Falling debris from downed targets caused additional destruction at 16 more sites.
The Air Force added that one missile failed to reach its target on its own, and 15 drones are considered lost from radar. Authorities warned that isolated enemy UAVs may still be in the airspace and urged residents not to ignore air-raid alerts and to follow safety guidance.
December 27 strikes: what we know
Russian forces on December 27 launched a massive combined strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. According to city authorities, 28 people were injured, 13 of them hospitalized.
Emergency power outages were introduced on Kyiv’s Left Bank due to the attack. In addition, more than 2,600 residential buildings, 187 kindergartens, 138 schools and 22 social facilities were left without centralized heating.
Russia also hit the Bila Tserkva district of Kyiv region. One woman was confirmed killed.
