On January 5, 2026, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Europe to develop its own defense capabilities to counter the threat of Russian hybrid attacks. Speaking ahead of his visit to Vilnius, Lithuania, Wadephul emphasized strong European cohesion as critical in countering Russia’s threat. Germany and Lithuania agreed that decisive action is needed to dissuade Russia from further escalation. The German government is collaborating with Lithuania, NATO, and the EU to enhance controls in the Baltic Sea, increase vigilance, and invest in infrastructure. Wadephul highlighted shared support for Ukraine and the importance of a strong, defensible Europe to secure lasting peace. He is also scheduled to visit the German Tank Brigade 45 in Lithuania, which was commissioned in April 2025 as part of NATO’s eastern flank protection, to underline Germany’s seriousness in supporting allies. The Brigade is expected to be fully operational by 2027, with 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian employees.
