Overnight on January 6, several regions of Russia issued air-raid alerts over a drone threat. Social media reports said an oil depot and a plant were hit in the Lipetsk and Penza regions.
Explosions were also heard in the Republic of Bashkortostan, including the city of Sterlitamak, as well as in Tver, according to Russian media and monitoring channels.
Residents of Penza reported the first blasts around 2 a.m. The Telegram channel SHOT reported about 10 explosions were heard in the city, and witnesses in the eastern part of the city saw bright flashes in the sky. Before that, people reported hearing the sound of drone engines overhead.
Later, monitoring channels reported that the Biomintez plant in Penza was targeted. There is no official confirmation at the time of publication.
Around 2 a.m., residents of the Russian city of Tver also reported explosions. The outlet ASTRA, citing local authorities, said debris from a drone fell on a residential high-rise.
Russian authorities also said two people were injured in Tver and one person was killed. At the same time, monitoring channels reported that electronic warfare systems were operating in the city during the attack.
In Russia’s Lipetsk region, drones attacked an oil depot, according to monitoring channels, sparking a large fire.
Drones also reached the Republic of Bashkortostan overnight. ASTRA reported that a series of explosions rocked the city of Sterlitamak. The city hosts a major petrochemical plant that has previously been targeted by drones. There was no immediate information on the impact of the attack.
On January 4, monitoring channels reported a drone attack on the Russian city of Yelets, after which the Energiya plant caught fire.
Also overnight on January 4, Moscow came under a mass drone attack; more than 100 flights were canceled at the capital’s airports amid the strikes.
