Ukrainian forces say they killed dozens of Russian troops who attempted to use the Soyuz gas pipeline to advance in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region. The report came from the 7th Corps of the Air Assault Forces on Monday, January 5.
The incident unfolded on the Kupyansk axis, the corps said. Russia committed up to 50 soldiers in an attempted breach north of Novoplatonivka, moving toward Nova Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove.
“The enemy tried to use the gas pipeline for a covert approach and subsequent force buildup. The 77th Separate Airmobile Brigade detected the plan in time and, in coordination with neighboring units, halted the assault. The elimination of at least 40 enemy service members has been confirmed,” the statement said.
The military added that Russian forces failed to achieve their objectives and that the situation in the brigade’s sector has been stabilized.
In December, Ukrainian forces destroyed a pipe the Russians used to infiltrate Kupyansk.
