Ukraine's drone strikes on Moscow become nearly daily as intensity rises

Ukraine has significantly stepped up drone strikes on Moscow, which by late December had effectively become daily, reports the news outlet Agentstvo.Novosti, citing Russia’s Defense Ministry and statements by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Since December 30, Russian authorities have issued daily reports on drones shot down while heading toward Moscow and the wider Moscow region.

Overnight Monday, Russian air defenses destroyed two drones over the Moscow region, with one reportedly bound for the capital. The day before, officials reported two drones downed in the evening and three more overnight. On Saturday, Sobyanin said seven drones targeted Moscow.

The raids have continued for several days in a row. Overnight Friday, five drones were destroyed, according to the Defense Ministry; on January 1, officials reported 30 drones shot down over the course of the night and day; on the evening of December 31, two more; and on December 30, three. Earlier attacks were recorded December 9–16 and 24–27. In total, based on official statements, at least 105 drones were launched at Moscow and the Moscow region over the past month.

Drones targeted the capital on 13 separate days in December, the highest monthly frequency of 2025. Previously, such strikes were more sporadic and often timed to symbolic dates. Now, Western analysts note, Ukraine has shifted to steady pressure on the Russian capital.

The largest single attack occurred on March 11, 2025, when 74 drones were headed toward Moscow, according to City Hall. The second-largest was recorded on December 11, when Russia’s air defenses reported 46 drones.
