Ukrainian military holds defensive lines around Pokrovsk as Russia steps up assaults

Russian forces have sought since 2024 to encircle and seize Pokrovsk in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, but Kyiv says its troops are holding their positions.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces are maintaining their lines in the northern part of Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian military’s “East” group of forces said in a Facebook post.

According to the “East” grouping, Ukrainian defenders are conducting clearing and assault operations in Pokrovsk and inflicting losses on Russian units. In nearby Mirnograd, Ukrainian troops are also holding their positions and engaging Russian forces on the outskirts of the city; reserves have been brought into Mirnograd.

On January 6, on the Pokrovsk axis, Russian forces launched 44 assaults on Ukrainian positions, all of which were repelled, the Ukrainian side said. Fighting took place near Nikanorivka, Krasny Liman, Rodynske, Mirnograd, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia and other settlements. In this sector, Russia lost more than 80 personnel, including 53 killed, according to the statement. Ukrainian troops also downed 25 enemy drones, destroyed 15 vehicles and seven pieces of specialized equipment, and struck two UAV control points, one artillery system and 12 enemy personnel shelters.

Across the “East” group’s area of responsibility on January 6, Russian forces carried out 72 attacks on Ukrainian positions, the grouping said. Ukrainian units continue active operations around Pokrovsk and Mirnograd. Logistics in Mirnograd are difficult, and efforts are underway to establish new supply routes into the city. Overall, in this area on January 6, Russia lost more than 370 personnel, and Ukrainian forces destroyed two Russian tanks, according to the statement.

The “East” grouping also reported heightened Russian activity on the Sloviansk axis, saying Moscow’s forces are concentrating manpower and equipment in the Serebryansky forest to push toward Dronivka - full control - and toward Platonivka.
