Pro-war Russian channels are noting that the length of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has now matched the duration of the so-called “Great Patriotic War.” They acknowledge that years could pass before the so-called special military operation (SVO) ends.
They say that 1,418 days of fighting raise questions about the consequences Russia will face if the war drags on, according to a post on one popular pro-war channel.
“It’s hard to accept, but today was day 1,418 of the ‘SVO’. Thus, the duration of full-scale hostilities on Ukrainian territory has equaled the length of the Great Patriotic War [the war between Nazi Germany and the USSR, 1941–45, within World War II],” the post reads.
Russians concede that the war against Ukraine could last for years and lead to dangerous consequences for the Russian Federation.
At the same time, pro-war channels say drawing direct parallels between the wars is “foolish.” They also acknowledge that Russian forces have not achieved their desired results, and a prolonged conflict could bring catastrophic consequences for Russia.
“It’s foolish to draw parallels, but it does make you think about the results. And about how many more days, months and years this could last, and what consequences it will lead to,” they conclude.
Media report that since Russia’s 2022 aggression, at least 19 generals have been killed at the front and in the rear, and the most recently eliminated top officer is Fanil Sarvarov, who was blown up in Moscow at the end of 2025.
Economist Vitaliy Shapran argues that Russia’s situation is far from what its propaganda portrays, and that in 2026 the country faces a Great Depression.
