Latvian National Armed Forces publish evidence of Belarusian involvement in illegal migration planning and organization

On January 14, 2026, Latvia’s National Armed Forces released evidence pointing to direct Belarusian military coordination in illegal migration flow facilitation. The evidence comprises seized documents and photos showing Belarusian military radios and materials, including internal documents from Belarusian border guards linked to the 19th mechanized brigade near Vitebsk. Mobile devices of detained illegal migrants confirmed communications with Belarusian border personnel and military transport. Latvian authorities routinely detect electronic radar surveillance emanating from Belarus affecting navigation systems within Latvian territory. Since 2021, cooperative operations between Latvia’s National Armed Forces, State Border Guard, and Police have been strengthening to counter illegal migration and associated destabilizing activities orchestrated by Belarus, considered part of hybrid warfare efforts destabilizing Latvia and Europe. The Latvian Ministry urges public vigilance and encourages reporting suspicious activities via designated hotlines.
