Germany’s defense conglomerate Rheinmetall has received an order to supply Ukraine with equipment for an ammunition plant and says it is fulfilling those commitments.
Ukraine’s government has allocated a site for a new Rheinmetall ammunition factory, CEO Armin Papperger said in an interview with Ukrinform.
Although the search for a suitable location had been delayed, a site has now been assigned.
“Of course, further organizational and regulatory issues still need to be clarified. We are ready to start construction of the facility as soon as possible,” Papperger said.
Rheinmetall has received an order to supply Ukraine with equipment for the ammunition plant and is carrying out those obligations.
Asked about Ukraine’s response to Rheinmetall’s proposal to localize armored vehicle production, Papperger said it had generated “significant interest.” However, he added, such a project requires substantial local investment and financing must be secured.
Overall, Papperger said cooperation between Ukraine and Rheinmetall is progressing well and spans multiple sectors: artillery munitions, infantry fighting vehicles, air defense systems, space-based reconnaissance, mobile field hospitals, and more.
“We are grateful to be such an important industrial partner for the country’s armed forces in many areas,” Papperger emphasized.
In August 2025, it was reported that a plant producing 155 mm artillery shells in Ukraine was under construction, with plans to double shell output.
Later, it became known that Rheinmetall would invest 400 million euros in a plant in Lithuania to produce propellant charges for 155 mm artillery shells.
