Kazakhstan protests strikes on Russian oil infrastructure used for Kazakh crude

Kazakhstan has lodged a protest over attacks on oil tankers and Russian oil infrastructure used to export Kazakh crude.

Astana reacted after drone strikes on tankers bound for the CPC terminal in the Black Sea, voicing “serious concern” without directly naming any party responsible.

What Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry said

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yerlan Zhetibayev said Kazakhstan is not a party to the armed conflict and contributes to global and European energy security.

He added that the rise in such incidents increases risks to international energy infrastructure. Kazakhstan urged partners to take joint steps to prevent similar situations. The statement did not directly accuse Ukraine.

Users on social media noted that Kazakhstan stayed largely silent as Russia destroyed and continues to strike Ukraine’s energy system, and did not invoke international law then. They argue Ukraine is not to blame for Kazakhstan’s reliance on Russian infrastructure to export oil.

Ukraine has not officially commented on the strikes. Still, the context is clear, experts say: Russia has systematically targeted Ukraine’s energy, gas and oil infrastructure; in response, Ukraine has hit Russian sites and often does not claim responsibility.

Kazakhstan has become dependent on Russian ports and pipelines. Russia turned energy into a wartime target and is now facing the consequences.
