A temporary ceasefire has taken effect around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, with oversight by the IAEA.
Ukraine and Russia have agreed to a temporary ceasefire around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The deal, brokered by the IAEA, applies solely to the area around the facility, according to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
He said the pause in fighting is necessary to restore the last backup power line, which was damaged on January 2. Without it, the plant’s operation remains at risk and nuclear safety concerns persist.
Repair crews from Ukraine’s operator are expected to begin work in the coming days. IAEA representatives are already heading to the area to observe the process firsthand and help ensure its safety.
Grossi emphasized this is the fourth localized ceasefire in the Zaporizhzhia NPP area. It does not amount to a broader truce, but it enables critical technical work that directly affects the safety of millions on all sides.
