Last-minute Patriot and NASAMS deliveries help Ukraine repel mass Russian strike, Zelensky says

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down 342 aerial targets overnight, including 27 ballistic and cruise missiles. Still, there is a serious need for interceptor missiles for air-defense systems.

Air-defense missiles arrived in Ukraine a day before the January 20 barrage, which significantly helped repel the attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on his Telegram channel.

He added that a key task for Ukrainian diplomats is to secure sufficient missiles for the country’s air-defense network.

Russia attacked Kyiv and the regions of Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava and Sumy overnight, the president said.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia used a Zircon anti-ship missile, 18 Iskander-M/S-300 ballistic missiles, 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 339 strike UAVs of the Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas and other types - about 250 of them Shaheds.

Kyiv region was the main axis of the strike.

Preliminary data indicate air defenses downed 342 targets:

- 14 Iskander-M/S-300 ballistic missiles

- 13 Kh-101 cruise missiles

- 315 UAVs, including Shahed, Gerbera and other types

At the same time, impacts from five missiles and 24 strike UAVs were recorded at 11 locations, and debris from downed drones fell at 12 locations. Information on two missiles is being clarified.

Zelensky said the consequences for the power and heating systems will be discussed on a conference call. The most difficult situation is in Kyiv, where many homes were left without heat.

On the night of January 20, Russia launched another mass missile-and-drone attack on Ukraine’s energy system.

The worst-hit city is Kyiv, where nearly 6,000 homes were left without heating. Water service was also out on the city’s left bank.

Some buildings in Dnipro also lost heat. The same day, law enforcement carried out a search involving Mayor Borys Filatov.
