Syrskyi outlines difficult situation near Pokrovsk and Ocheretyne as Russia pulls in reserves

Russian forces are stepping up pressure and bringing in reserves along the Pokrovsk and Ocheretyne axes of the front, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said Monday, January 26, on Telegram after visit to the Donetsk region.

He said the operational situation in these areas is difficult. About 400 combat clashes took place there over the past week.

“The aggressor is not giving up attempts to break through, increasing pressure and pulling in reserves. Our key task is to inflict maximum losses on the enemy, destroy its reserves and steadily reduce its offensive potential,” Syrskyi wrote.

While on the ground, the commander-in-chief and unit leaders closely analyzed the course of the fighting.

Russian forces continue to use small infantry assault groups to push forward. As Syrskyi noted, their timely detection, containment and destruction require constant battlefield monitoring, tight coordination among units and flexible tactical decisions.

He said special attention is being paid to strengthening unmanned systems units — prioritizing strike drones to target the enemy — as well as developing logistics with the use of robotic platforms.

“The war is changing — so are our approaches to fighting it. Scaling modern technologies directly affects combat effectiveness and helps save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers,” Syrskyi emphasized.

There were 138 engagements on the front line on January 25. In the Pokrovsk sector, Ukrainian forces stopped more than 40 assaults near 10 settlements.

According to Ukrainian military, over the past day Russia lost more than 1,000 troops killed and wounded. Since the start of the full-scale war, Russian losses are approaching 1.3 million people.
