Ukraine is seeking broad international backing to hasten the end of the war, but some countries continue to defend the Kremlin’s interests. Among them, China plays a prominent role, actively supporting Russia and supplying it with economic and technical resources.
In comments to the outlet Telegraf, Ukrainian lawmaker from the Servant of the People party and diplomat Bohdan Yaremenko said China is working to prevent Moscow’s defeat — and is not hiding it.
Moreover, Beijing’s support for Russia has a clear strategic purpose, he said. China supplies equipment, transport and material resources that Moscow cannot produce at such scale.
Yaremenko argued that Beijing views the Russia-Ukraine war as a confrontation between the Kremlin and the West and seeks to prevent a U.S. and European victory.
He also emphasized that it is virtually impossible for Ukraine to change China’s position.
“China recognized its national interests long ago, and we cannot convince them that their understanding of what is happening in Ukraine is wrong. They understand it the way they do, and we will not impose our vision on them under any circumstances. Believe me, the president tried,” he added.
Yaremenko said some experts see Donald Trump’s outreach to Vladimir Putin as an attempt to pull Russia away from China. However, he said, that does not change Ukraine’s situation.
He explained that Trump does not view Putin as an enemy and does not seek an escalation with Russia, which is why support for Ukraine - compared with previous U.S. administrations - has significantly decreased.
“An attempt to please Martians, or someone else… And what do we get out of it? Trump does not consider Putin an enemy and does not want any escalation in relations with Russia. That’s what matters! I do not know the real reasons for Trump’s love for Putin, but all this results in us not receiving the kind of support we had under the previous administration,” the lawmaker concluded.
As a reminder, Ukraine and Russia buy key components for combat drones from the same factories in China. Notably, those companies have reportedly been forced to set up “dual schedules” so clients from the warring countries do not physically cross paths.
According to ISW analysts, Russia continues to deliberately drag out the negotiating process over the war in Ukraine and insists on its initial military demands.
